Fiverr is a large company that reached $337.4 million in revenue last year. This platform charges low service fees, meaning most of what you earn goes directly into your pocket. However tempting, here are some tips I wish I knew earlier to avoid being taken advantage of.
When starting out in a creative career, it's understandable to feel being taken advantage of and accept low pay from clients. As a new creator on Fiverr, keep in mind freelancing is different than traditional work—you have the power to walk away if a project seems too demanding for the service fee offered. There are plenty of other potential clients on the platform, and some may offer you a higher rate once you've rejected one bid.
Before rejecting, try bargaining with the client. Explain factors like the time required, skills needed, and reference benchmarks like minimum wage to determine a fair rate. Don't make the mistake like I did of trading a full day's work for just $8, minimize potential exploitation by knowing your worth and being willing to negotiate upfront.
While not getting exploited is important, don't become overly focused on money as a creative. Sometimes lower offers can still build your portfolio if they interest you. In the beginning, supplement freelancing with additional income sources, and prioritize maintaining a proper work-life balance above all else.
Being nice and pleasant to work with will serve you better than raw talent alone. There was a client who offered me only $20 for a full music production project. However, by staying patient and understanding he is a student with limited budget, I turned it into a positive experience—a new friend and positive review for my portfolio. Small daily interactions ultimately define your success more than any award or social metric.
